Domino’s Pizza Well-Positioned for Long Run
Image Shown: Domino’s has the right business model for the long haul. Unit economics are fantastic for franchisees, while same-store sales continue to benefit from first-mover digital initiatives. Earnings per share growth has been stellar for the past decade. Image Source: April 2021 Presentation. Domino’s has the right business model for the digital economy, and we expect robust net unit growth and retail sales growth in the mid-to-high single-digit range over the next few years. This asset-light, free-cash-flow generating franchisor is stealing market share hand over fist, while it drives robust earnings expansion and buys back its own stock (it has a $1 billion repurchase authorization, as of February 2021). Everything seems in place for Domino’s to remain atop the global quick-service pizza industry, as operational simplicity is the name of the game. Investors need to pay attention to Domino’s net debt load, but we see little in the way of this fantastic growth story. The firm remains one of our favorite restaurant ideas and a holding in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Apr 30, 2021
Dividend Increases/Decreases for the Week April 30
Let's take a look at companies that raised/lowered their dividend this week. Apr 29, 2021
Visa’s Business Is on the Rebound
Image Shown: Visa Inc remains a tremendous free cash flow generator, aided by its asset-light business model. We continue to be big fans of Visa and include the company as a top-weighted idea in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Image Source: Visa Inc – Second Quarter of Fiscal 2021 IR Earnings Presentation. On April 27, Visa reported second quarter fiscal 2021 earnings (period ended March 31, 2021) that beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. Visa’s GAAP revenues and GAAP operating income were down 2% and 9% year-over-year, respectively, last fiscal quarter as its cross-border business remains subdued. On the flip side, Visa’s total payment volumes and processed transaction were up 8% and 11% year-over-year, respectively, in constant currency terms. Coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) vaccine distribution efforts should help global health authorities eventually bring the pandemic to an end, though the return of international travel and related activities to pre-pandemic levels is likely a way off. During its latest earnings report, Visa’s business showcased serious signs that a recovery was already well underway, and we continue to be huge fans of the name. We include Visa as a top-weighted idea in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Apr 23, 2021
Lockheed Martin Boosts Guidance
Image Source: Lockheed Martin Corporation – First Quarter of Fiscal 2021 IR Earnings Presentation. Lockheed Martin Corp, maker of missile systems, space offerings, radar systems, jet fighters (including the F-35), and other advanced weaponry, will play a leading role in keeping Western armed forces (and the militaries of Western allies) ahead of rising geopolitical tensions. We include the defense contractor as an idea in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio, and shares of LMT yield ~2.7% as of this writing. Lockheed Martin’s dividend growth trajectory is impressive, its free cash flow generating abilities are stellar, and it has an enormous backlog which provides a high degree of visibility as it concerns its future cash flow generating abilities. Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics Partnership Update
Image: Vertex Pharma is co-developing gene-based therapy for sickle cell disease (SCD) and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia (TDT). CTX001 may offer a potential cure for people that have SCD and TDT.On April 20, Vertex Pharma and CRISPR Therapeutics issued a press release that noted “the companies have amended their collaboration agreement to develop, manufacture and commercialize CTX001, an investigational CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing therapy that is being developed as a potentially curative therapy for sickle cell disease (SCD) and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia (TDT).” The development is a win-win for both Vertex Pharma and CRISPR Therapeutics and reinforces our positive view towards both company’s capital appreciation upside. We prefer Vertex Pharma as our speculative biotech play in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio given its more resilient financials and established commercial portfolio. Note that with early stage biotech companies such as CRISPR Therapeutics, investors are taking outsized risks and could lose all their capital should future endeavors not pan out as expected. Nothing May Derail the U.S. Economy In the Long Run
Image Source: Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. U.S. gross domestic product is back on the upswing, and we fully expect the U.S. economy to recover, and then continue its expansion in coming years. U.S. GDP, January 1947 through October 2020. Warren Buffett may have said it best in Berkshire Hathaway’s 2020 Annual Report: “Never bet against America.” Mar 24, 2021
Two Railroad Operators to Join Forces, Creating the First Fully Integrated Canada-US-Mexico Railroad Network
Image Source: Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd, Kansas City Southern – March 2021 Acquisition Presentation. On March 21, Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd announced it was acquiring Kansas City Southern through a cash-and-stock deal worth ~$29.0 billion by enterprise value (factoring in assumed debt). The combination will create the first fully integrated Canada-US-Mexico railroad operator with ~$780 million in annualized synergies expected within three years of the deal closing. Once this two-part transaction is complete, the new entity will have a US Class 1 railroad network that spans ~20,000 miles with ~20,000 employees supporting its operations. The pro forma company will be renamed Canadian Pacific Kansas City (‘CPKC’). Mar 24, 2021
ViacomCBS Makes Big Bet on Streaming
Image Source: ViacomCBS Inc – Fourth Quarter of 2020 IR Earnings Presentation. After Viacom and CBS were reunited in December 2019, the new entity ViacomCBS Inc has finally started to gain some traction on the video streaming front. The service CBS All Access, which has since been rebranded as Paramount+, was largely a dud and did not gain the level of attention that Walt Disney Company’s Disney+ service, AT&T Inc’s HBO Max service, or Netflix's namesake service were able to generate. For background, ViacomCBS’s operations include various TV network and cable TV assets, TV and movie studios, various streaming services, and a book publisher. That includes various CBS networks (CBS, CBS Sports, CBS News), CBS studios, MTV, Comedy Central, Paramount, Nickelodeon, Pluto TV (another video streaming service that is free and ad-supported), BET, CMT, POP TV, half of CW (AT&T owns the remaining 50%), COLORS (focused on India), telefe (focused on Spanish-speaking content), SHOWTIME, and the book publisher Simon & Schuster. However, with ViacomCBS launching Paramount+ this month in the US and various Latin American markets, the service now has a larger slate of content than CBS All Access and is supported by ViacomCBS’ vast library (and most importantly, ViacomCBS has plans to produce dozens of original series for Paramount+ going forward). Paramount+ is leaning on properties such as Star Trek and SpongeBob SquarePants along with reboots of shows like iCarly to create engaging original content. Content is king. The combination of Viacom and CBS helped address that issue and provided the new entity with the scale required to be competitive in this business. Mar 22, 2021
Nike’s Digital Strategy Supports Its Future Revenue Growth and Margin Expansion Prospects
Image Shown: Since announcing the launch of its Consumer Direct Offense initiative in June 2017, Nike has done a stellar job building its omni-channel selling capabilities. The company’s digitally-oriented direct-to-consumer strategy offers it the opportunity to enhance both its long-term revenue growth outlook and operating margin expansion potential. On March 18, Nike reported mixed earnings though its near-term guidance indicates its financial performance will continue to rebound after taking a beating from the COVID-19 pandemic. As of this writing, shares of NKE are trading in the upper bound of our fair value estimate range, indicating shares are roughly fairly valued at this time. The coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has made it clear that companies with strong omni-channel selling capabilities are in a much better position than their physical-store dependent peers. Home delivery, curbside pickup, and order online/pickup in-store represent some of the main ways companies are meeting demand received through their digital platforms. E-commerce demand has boomed over the past several quarters and that trajectory has legs, in our view. Though e-commerce was already steadily becoming a larger part of the global economy over the past two decades (adoption rates vary across geographical regions), the pandemic has accelerated that trend. Nike recognized the need to develop omni-channel selling capabilities earlier than most, and part of that strategy involved building out an ecosystem of mobile apps and related websites. The apparel, footwear, equipment, and accessory company announced its ‘Consumer Direct Offense’ initiative back in June 2017 and the goal is to build up a sizable direct-to-consumer (‘DTC’) business with a large e-commerce component. The company has its fitness apps Nike Run Club and Nike Training Club along with the Nike app, which supports its e-commerce operations, and its Nike SNKRS app that focuses on footwear. Its digital strategy also involved Nike parting ways with Amazon a couple of years ago so Nike could better control its digital strategy. On March 18, Nike reported third quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended February 28, 2021) that saw its ‘NIKE Direct’ sales grow by 20% year-over-year, hitting $4.0 billion. Mar 16, 2021
Roblox Goes Public; Strong Balance Sheet and Expected Free Cash Flow
Image Source: Roblox Corporation – S-1/A SEC Filing. Roblox Corp recently went public through a direct listing on March 10, 2021. The video game platform company has an extensive growth runway with multiple avenues to further expand its business. We are impressed with its free cash flow generating abilities, pristine balance sheet, and strong growth rates of late. Roblox’s outlook for 2021 indicates its growth story is expected to continue this year in earnest. Capital appreciation seeking investors should take a deeper look at Roblox, though we caution that its co-founder, CEO, and chairman controls most of the company’s voting power.
