Domino’s Pizza Breaks Through Downtrend on Uber Eats and Postmates Deal
Image Source: Domino’s Pizza is up nearly 14% on a year-to-date basis during 2023, but the company’s shares haven’t done much over the past 52 weeks. On July 12, Domino’s Pizza announced that it had inked a new deal with Uber that would allow customers in the U.S. to order Domino’s food through the Uber Eats and Postmates apps with delivery provided by drivers of Domino’s and its franchisees. Domino’s Pizza continues to be a standout leader in digital initiatives across the restaurant arena, and the firm noted that the new agreement will open up Domino’s and its franchisees “to a new segment of customers and what (it) believes will be a meaningful amount of incremental delivery orders.” The high end of our fair value estimate of Domino’s stands at $450 per share.

NextEra Energy Expects 10% Annual Dividend Growth
Image Source: Nextera Energy. We think the utility sector is generally overrepresented in many dividend-oriented and income-producing portfolios, but we think NextEra Energy is a good fit for the well-diversified ESG Newsletter portfolio given its vast renewable resource assets. Shares of Nextera Energy have fallen more than 20% since the beginning of 2022, while the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund ETF is down more than 8% over the same time period. Shares of Nextera Energy yield ~2.6%.

ALERT: Big Yield Additions to Dividend Growth Newsletter Portfolio and High Yield Dividend Newsletter Portfolio
Image Source: Mike Cohen. With the federal funds rate standing at 5%-5.25%, the hurdle rate for yield in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio and High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio is much higher these days. We’re not at all worried about a recession as that was largely priced in during 2022, and we’re looking ahead to strong nominal GDP and huge opportunities within artificial intelligence [AI]. Though we may add a dividend grower that is yielding below the 5% yield threshold to the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio with expectations for breakneck dividend-per-share expansion in the future, these days we’re looking for a couple incremental ideas that have yields already much higher than the 5% mark to add to the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio and the High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio. Let's dig in.

CFA Institute Blog: "Hide-'Til-Maturity" Accounting
CFA Institute Blog: "The Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) collapse recalls the tussle over the accounting for financial instruments after the global financial crisis (GFC) in 2009, particularly the debate about whether some financial instruments should be carried at amortized cost (held-to-maturity, HTM) rather than at fair value (available-for-sale, AFS), or what is referred to as the “mixed measurement model.”" -- Sandy Peters, CPA, CFA

Expect Huge Equity Returns This Decade, Much More Volatility However
Image: Without question, the stylistic area of large cap growth has been the place to be for almost 15 years now. We think it remains the place to be. We expect huge equity returns this decade, but much more volatility – the kind of volatility that will make holding stocks painful at times (and shake out some investors at the worst possible time), but it is what it is, as it has always been. We’re as bullish today as we’ve ever been. Cheers!

Nvidia Rockets Higher to Propel Large Cap Growth
Image: Nvidia powers higher after releasing better-than-expected second-quarter fiscal 2024 guidance. The company continues to be a driver behind the outperformance of large cap growth as a stylistic area. We haven’t seen a quarterly guidance beat like this since Synaptics put up a monster quarter when Apple started using its innovative click-wheel technology in the first-generation iPod, almost 20 years ago. Nvidia Corp.'s outlook for the second quarter of its fiscal 2024 was phenomenal thanks to tremendous interest in its chips that power artificial intelligence [AI]. We expect a material increase in our fair value estimate of Nvidia, but shares remain quite pricey, in our view. Revenue during Nvidia’s fiscal second quarter is expected to be ~$11 billion versus consensus that had been looking at ~$7 billion, implying a forward outlook more than 50% better than what the Street was looking for. Interestingly, Synaptics’ click-wheel technology started the wave of Apple products, which have been the go-to tech platform for years, and Nvidia may very well be the driving force behind AI proliferation, the next great technology platform.

Disney’s 5-Year Returns Have Been Pitiful
Image: Since the beginning of 2018, Disney’s shares have fallen, while the S&P 500 has surged. Though we liked the company more recently, we no longer include shares in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Disney has its hands full with its feud with Florida Governor DeSantis, a weakening linear television market, and intense rivalries in the streaming market. All of this won’t be solved overnight and might even worsen. From where we stand, investors simply don’t need the complexity of the Disney story at this time, and the company’s 5-year returns tell the story of a troubled company. With shares of Disney largely fairly valued, we won’t be adding the company back to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio anytime soon.
