“Bought” Low and “Sold” Low with Meta
Image: Shares of Meta Platforms have been on a wild ride the past few years. We didn’t do well with the stock, unfortunately. Let the good times roll in big cap tech and large cap growth! What a fantastic year 2023 is turning out to be and thank you for sticking with us. If Meta serves as any example for you, it should be that you shouldn’t expect us to get everything "right," but it should be very, very clear that we’ve gotten far more things “right” than we’ve gotten “wrong” over the years. Cheers!

Meta Platforms Surges Back to Fair Value Estimate
Image: Meta Platforms’ shares continue to recover from its massive fallout in 2022. We’re sticking with our $225 fair value estimate following the company’s first-quarter 2023 earnings report. Though Meta Platforms is no longer included in the newsletter portfolios, many readers know that we’ve been bullish on the areas of large cap growth and big cap tech for a long time now and that we include Alphabet, Microsoft, and Apple as core ideas in the newsletter portfolios. Year-to-date and over the past year, an ETF that tracks the area of large cap growth (SCHG) has outperformed an ETF that tracks the area of small cap value (IWN) by roughly 9 percentage points. Over the past five years, the outperformance grows to more than 70 percentage points. Without a doubt, large cap growth has been the place to be, and we’ve had a courtside view of why thanks to our fundamental, cash-flow-driven analysis. We expect large cap growth to continue to lead markets, and while we’ve grown skeptical of Meta Platforms, we like that the market is viewing its first-quarter 2023 report positively.

Maintaining Our Fair Value Estimates Across Ad-Driven Social Media Equities In Light of Long Term AI-Driven Chatbot Threats
Image: ChatGPT is taking the Internet by storm. A poem generated by the AI-driven chatbot in a matter of seconds about outperforming the stock market. Image Source: ChatGPT. We weren’t just having fun when we tested a new chatbot asking it to write a poem about outperforming the market. In case you haven’t heard yet, making the rounds on social media is a new artificial intelligence [AI] tool called ChatGPT. We're not making any changes to the fair value estimates of our ad-driven social media coverage at this time, but we're taking note that AI-driven chatbots can be a game-changer for a lot of industries.

Image Source: Valuentum. Readers should expect a substantial reduction in our fair value estimate of Meta Platforms on the basis of materially reduced forecasts of free cash flow. Apple’s calendar third-quarter results were good, considering that many were worried about iPhone 14 demand heading into the report. Amazon’s results support a cautious tone with respect to consumer spending, while we remain bullish on three of our best-performing ideas so far in 2022 – Vertex Pharma, Exxon Mobil, and Chevron. We didn’t see anything in the Republic Services and Digital Realty reports that would warrant any material changes to our theses at this time.

Microsoft Hinted at Trouble in Calendar Q2 But AMD’s Massive $1 Billion Quarterly Q3 Revenue Miss Spells Big Problems for PC Market; Search and News Advertising Revenue Also Likely Weakening Substantially
Image Source: Fritzchens Fritz. Economic conditions have deteriorated rapidly since Microsoft warned about deteriorating PC market demand in July of this year. AMD’s preliminary third-quarter report announced October 6 showed a massive $1 billion miss relative to prior expectations, and we think this is the beginning of a vicious cyclical downturn in the semiconductor industry, with few immune to the troubles, particularly in light of Apple’s warning about iPhone 14 demand. Further, we think search and news advertising has likely deteriorated since the calendar second-quarter reporting season, too, and this doesn’t bode well for the likes of Alphabet and Meta Platforms. Recent news about the strength of Tiktok and the lack of enthusiasm by Meta Platforms’ insiders that are building the metaverse have us thinking that Meta has turned into a value trap. We won’t hesitate to drop shares if the company’s outlook in its third-quarter report comes up short.

Post-Mortem on Facebook (Meta Platforms): Apple Crushed Our Thesis
Image: Thesis creep kept us excited about Meta, but we've since trimmed the "weighting" in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. We still like Meta near these technical support levels, but only as a smaller "weighting" in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, as updated August 19. What more can we say--Apple is eating Facebook’s lunch, and the iPhone giant is now advancing with its advertising revenue, too. Apple blew up our thesis on Meta, and that's the long and short of it.

ICYMI (Aug 19) -- ALERT -- PYPL, META, GOOG, V -- Making Some Big Changes in the Simulated Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio!
Image Shown: We are very happy with the overall "performance" of the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, which is carving out 2.6 percentage points of relative outperformance so far in 2022 on a price-only basis, as shown in the table above. However, we're making some big changes to the simulated newsletter portfolio today on some of our favorite names. Our best ideas continue to be in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, the simulated Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio, the simulated High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio, the simulated ESG Newsletter portfolio, and the Exclusive publication, as well as with our additional options commentary. We're making some big moves in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio today! At the moment, the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio is carving out about 2.6 percentage points of relative outperformance so far in 2022, on a price-only basis relative to the the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF. Overall, after some huge years, the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio is down a modest ~8.6% in 2022, by our estimates. Pretty good, all things considered. That said, the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF has bounced right off its 200-day moving average (technical resistance), and we're not going to sit by while the risks to the market this year increase. We remain bullish on stocks for the long haul, of course, but we think incremental alpha may be generated by removing/trimming/adding to some of our winners in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio at this time. We're changing our mind on a couple things, too, as any good investor does. [This note was emailed to members August 19.]

Three Growth Stocks That Offer Tremendous Value!
Image: Some of the most attractive stocks on the market have both growth and value characteristics. As the market struggles to find a near term bottom, three of our favorite ideas are on sale. Meta and Alphabet are dirt cheap, in our view, while Microsoft has tremendous dividend growth prospects. We expect these three names to bounce back considerably once economic uncertainty subsides.

Shares of Best Idea Meta Platforms Leap Higher After Stellar Earnings Report!
Image Shown: Shares of best idea Meta Platforms Inc surged higher by ~18% in afterhours trading on April 27 after its first quarter 2022 earnings report indicated that investor fears over its core business were overblown as its daily active user base posted solid growth in March 2022. The company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Meta Platforms reported first quarter 2022 earnings on April 27 that missed consensus top-line estimates but smashed past consensus bottom-line estimates. Shares of FB surged higher in the wake of its latest earnings report as the company’s family daily active people (‘DAP’) stood at 2.87 billion in March 2022, up 6% year-over-year, while its Facebook daily active users (‘DAU’) stood at 1.96 billion in March 2022, up 4% year-over-year. Rising competition from relative newcomers like TikTok in the social media space is not chipping away at Meta Platforms’ core business as investors had expected. The launch of Facebook Reels, which is similar to TikTok, has proven to be quite popular. We include Meta Platforms as a top-weighted idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and continue to be enormous fans of Meta Platforms. Shares of FB have tanked in recent months, though we have stuck with our thesis through thick and thin. Meta Platforms may finally regain its upward momentum in the wake of its stellar first quarter earnings update. The selloff seen in shares of FB and US equity markets more broadly over the past several months is way overdone and driven more so by panic selling than anything else, in our view. Our fair value estimate, under what we deem reasonable valuation assumptions, stands at $367 per share of FB, which is well above where Meta Platforms’ stock is trading at as of this writing.

Best Idea Alphabet Continues To Grow at a Robust Pace
Image Shown: Best idea Alphabet Inc continued to grow its revenues by a nice double-digit clip last quarter. Image Source: Alphabet Inc – First Quarter of 2022 Earnings Press Release. On April 26, Alphabet reported first quarter 2022 earnings that missed top-line estimates but beat bottom-line estimates. The company remains a free cash flow powerhouse with a fortress-like balance sheet and an incredibly promising growth outlook. Its core digital advertising business, its high-growth Google Cloud unit, and its longer term bets such as the self-driving company Waymo underpin our expectations that Alphabet will continue to grow its revenues at a nice premium to global GDP growth over the decades to come. We include shares of Alphabet Class A in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and remain big fans of the name.
