Update: COVID-19 Vaccine Race
Image Source: Johnson & Johnson – Second Quarter of Fiscal 2020 IR Earnings Presentation. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has devasted the global economy (though things are starting to improve) and has fundamentally altered daily human life. According to a draft report from the World Health Organization (‘WHO’), there were 29 COVID-19 vaccine candidates undergoing clinical trials as of August 13 along with 138 other candidates undergoing preclinical evaluation. It is a race against the clock. Unfortunately, as of this writing on August 18, there have been ~170,000 COVID-19-related deaths in the US alone according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (‘CDC’). We are optimistic that one of the many “shots on goal” will end up proving successful. The US launched Operation Warp Speed to accelerate the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, which involves providing funding to companies with promising vaccine candidates. Furthermore, please note that major economies around the world have adjusted their rules and procedures to allow for multiple phases of clinical trials to be conducted concurrently. Before getting into some of the most promising COVID-19 vaccine candidates, we hope everyone, their loved ones, and their family members are staying safe out there as we ride out the pandemic.

Bank of America is Working Through a Difficult Time
Image Shown: Summary of Bank of America’s 2Q2020 results. Image Source: Bank of America 2Q2020 Earnings Presentation. When putting all the puzzle pieces together, we see Bank of America facing the headwinds of low rates and sizable credit provisioning with relative ease thanks to its substantial pre-tax, pre-provision earnings power. As long as the economy doesn’t get drastically worse from here, long term investors will benefit from normalized valuations on more normalized earnings in the not-too-distant future.

Steel Dynamics Bets Big on North America’s Industrial Economy
Image Source: Steel Dynamics Inc – June 2020 IR Presentation. Investor sentiment towards the steel industry is rebounding as the medium- and long-term outlook for global industrial activity has improved markedly since March 2020. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has significantly hampered near-term industrial activity, though major fiscal stimulus packages (made feasible through major monetary stimulus programs) launched in various developed nations could provide some relief. Shares of Steel Dynamics have recovered meaningfully since their March 2020 lows and are trading a tad below our fair value estimate as of this writing. Shares of STLD yield ~3.6% on an annualized forward-looking basis as of this writing and we give the steel maker a Dividend Cushion ratio of 1.3x providing for a “GOOD” Dividend Safety rating. The company has made great strides in improving its financial position over the past several years. We will first provide some background on the fiscal stimulus measures that have either been approved and or proposed in key economies across the world, before digging deeper into Steel Dynamics.

Warren: Four Ways to Play the Market at This Juncture
Image Source: Daniel Lobo. In this piece, we examine where the economy and stock markets have been recently, where we are now, and where we are going next. We also highlight four key ways to play this volatile market. We think this is a helpful way to think about overall portfolio construction, especially so that one does not overly expose themselves to a particular set of risks that could come to fruition—like an extended downturn in the economy or a rapid discovery of a vaccine for Covid-19 on the other hand.

Our Thoughts on Warner Music Group Going Public
Image Shown: Shares of Warner Music Group Corp were trading comfortably above their initial public offering (‘IPO’) price of $25 per share at of the end of normal trading hours on June 8, after going public on June 3. Warner Music went public on June 3, though shares were sold by the company’s stockholders in the IPO and not the firm itself, meaning these proceeds are not expected to go to Warner Music Group. The company owns various record labels including Atlantic Records, Warner Records, Elektra Records and Parlophone Records along with its global music publishing business Warner Chappell Music. For some background, please note Warner Music Group counts Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and Cardi B as some of its recording artists and on the music publishing business side of things songwriters including Twenty One Pilots, Lizzo and Katy Perry are part of the firm’s team. In 2011, Access Industries purchased Warner Music Group and took the company private after the firm was previously publicly traded from 2005 to 2011.

Santander Remains Well-Capitalized
Image Source: Santander S.A. 1Q2020 Earnings Presentation. Europe is overbanked with too much capacity, which means little or no earnings power for many of the players involved, including Santander Europe. We’re paying close attention to the key banking players in Europe to assess the likelihood of a global financial contagion that may accompany the global pandemic that has become COVID-19.

Good News for Facebook Ahead of Earnings Report
Image Shown: Facebook Inc’s top-line has experienced meaningful growth in recent years. Image Source: Facebook Inc – Fourth Quarter and Full-Year 2019 Earnings IR Presentation. One of our favorite Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holdings is Facebook, and we appreciate its pristine balance sheet (plenty of cash on hand and no debt on the books as of the end of 2019), promising growth trajectory (short-term headwinds aside, digital advertising is a secular growth market and likely to bounce back strongly once the pandemic subsides), and we would like to highlight that shares of FB trade at a meaningful discount to our fair value estimate (which sits at $234 per share) as of this writing. Recently, several things have happened that supports our thesis as to why Facebook is a stellar company which will cover in this note. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic will depress Facebook’s near-term performance, but the firm’s medium- and long-term outlook remains very promising.

Tesla’s Well-Timed Equity Raise Provides a Much Needed Buffer During the Current Crisis
Image Shown: Shares of Tesla Inc are still up materially over the past year after coming in considerably since skyrocketing in late-2019 through early-2020, before the pandemic slowed the global economy to a crawl. Tesla isn’t immune to the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, far from it, but a well-timed capital raise combined with strong operational performance in the first quarter of 2020 (before the pandemic hit) has renewed investor confidence in the electric vehicle maker and battery producer. With that in mind, the top end of our fair value range estimate sits at $424 per share, well below where TSLA is trading at as of this writing. We maintain our view that Tesla is a speculative play only for the most risk-seeking investors.

US Fiscal Stimulus Update
Image Source: frankieleon. The US Congress is debating and working on a massive multi-trillion dollar fiscal stimulus package to mitigate the negative impact the ongoing novel coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic is having on the domestic economy and to provide for additional healthcare funds to cash-strapped entities to combat the virus.

Panic Buying of Consumer Goods and Its Impact on Discounted Cash Flow Valuation
Image: Sam’s Club (Crystal Lake, IL), March 14. Water and toilet paper continue to be completely sold out at most big box retailers as COVID-19 panic buying of consumer goods continues to spread. Fear-induced purchases in the US have also helped drive up investor sentiment toward consumer staples names with a large domestic presence. We caution, however, that near-term earnings bumps emanating from “stockpiling” have little impact on a company’s intrinsic value, which is derived more from normalized conditions, and in most cases, the panic buying of consumer goods is merely pulling demand forward. “You know what’s disappearing from the supermarket shelves? Toilet paper…There’s an acute shortage of toilet paper in the United States.” – Johnny Carson, in 1973, causing a month-long shortage of toilet paper in the US at the time. The spread of COVID-19 is creating a similar panic as consumers stock up on just about everything from toilet paper to canned goods to hand sanitizer.
