Trade Worries Back on the Table
Image Source: Michael Vadon. We think investors shouldn’t overreact, but we didn’t have two world wars in the last century because leaders of superpowers “got along” nicely.

Microsoft Now $100+ Per Share
Almost every dividend-related presentation we made around the country, we talked about how much we liked Microsoft as a dividend growth idea. The stock was originally added to the simulated Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio at inception at ~$26 per share, and we started the company out as an 8% position! It means the world to us to let you know that Microsoft’s stock has now surpassed $100 per share! Seriously – could we possibly have done any better with our top dividend growth idea out of the gates?

Uncertainty of Italy’s Political Future Weighing on Global Investors' Minds
Image shown: Duomo di Milano. Italy holds ~$2.7 trillion in public debt, and global investors are worried that a new government could implement policies that would weaken the country’s credit status. Though a sovereign debt crisis does not seem probable at this point, bond markets are suggesting that risks are rising.

What’s Working (or NOT Working) in Today’s Market?
Image shown: Crude oil continues to lead gainers while consumer staples, REITs, and energy MLPs continue to get shellacked. Let’s take a look at what’s been working and what’s not been working in the market thus far in 2018. To little surprise, in our opinion, commodity prices have been the leaders, while interest-rate sensitive equities have been the laggards. We’ve been expecting this.

We Said Consumer Staples Would Underperform
The consumer staples sector has been pummeled by a number of factors, from long-term concerns about the adoption of new products in the tobacco industry to pressures on gross margins for branded consumables and generally underperforming free cash flows in the tried-and-true beverage arena. We still like the business models of many constituents, but you knew this was coming.

Market Valuations Not “Insane” But Certainly Not Cheap Either
The stock market is not insanely overpriced, but it is certainly not cheap either. We’re watching the technicals and moves in the 10-year Treasury closely for signs of where the market may go next. We discuss Walmart’s recent disappointment and add another to the list of companies that the Dividend Cushion ratio effectively highlighted the heightened income risk profile of, prior to the dividend cut. Chipotle is on the move!

Cisco Rallies Big Time!
Image shown: Performance of the S&P 500 (SPY) since August 2017. As US equities continue their newly-found volatility, let’s take a look at some recent earnings reports and other developments around the markets. Cisco, the workhorse of both simulated newsletter portfolios, put up a fantastic report and upped its dividend. Berkshire continues to love Apple, and we maintain the view that the 10-year Treasury rate may be the greatest determinant of how well stocks perform in the coming decades. Airlines, garbage stocks, the “gas tax,” and more.

Systemic Risk

Hasbro, Boeing Pop as Market Bounces Back
Image Source: US Missile Defense Agency. June 22, 2014 - The Missile Defense Agency's Flight Test 06b Ground-Based Interceptor launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. on June 22, 2014. The markets have finally been getting the volatility that we’ve all been waiting for, and we don’t like the idea that the market is now trading more like a cryptocurrency. Granted, it’s important to stay focused over a long-term time horizon, which irons out the ups and downs, but there’s just something about 1,000+ daily swings on the Dow Jones Industrial Average that really doesn’t sit well with us, regardless of what that implies with respect to the percentage change. Can you imagine -- All of this over just a couple basis point increase in the 10-year and one very, very small ETF losing most of its value? What if something truly material happens? This market is fragile.
