GameStop’s Problems Continue
Image Source: GameStop Corporation – Fourth Quarter Fiscal 2018 Earnings IR Presentation. On December 10, video game retailer GameStop Corp reported third quarter earnings for its fiscal 2019 (13-week period ended November 2, 2019) that were simply terrible. Shares of GME were down big after-hours on December 10. GAAP net sales were down 26% year-over-year last quarter, hitting $1.4 billion, while the company’s GAAP operating loss came in at ~$0.05 billion, an improvement versus an operating loss of $0.5 billion (due to a large goodwill impairment charge) in the same period last fiscal year. GameStop halted its common dividend program in the middle of 2019, which freed up substantial cash flow for share buybacks and deleveraging efforts. Nvidia Beats Low Expectations and Shares are Rewarded Accordingly
Image Source: Nvidia Corporation - IR Presentation. Nvidia beat low expectations and its share price was rewarded accordingly, keeping in mind NVDA trades well off its 2018 highs. Our fair value estimate for NVDA stands at $184 per share, meaningfully above where shares are trading at, as of this writing. We are staying away from the name given risks associated with its purchase of Mellanox, weakness in data center demand in the face of trade war concerns and the synchronized slowdown in global economic activity, and in light of Nvidia’s low VBI rating. We think there are better investment opportunities out there, but we can respect that Nvidia is showing promising signs of improvement.

Netflix may have taken the initial steps to enter the video-gaming market. Even as the digital streaming of games may have already signaled the death knell of GameStop’s lucrative physical used-game business, that Netflix may be moving into video games may further truncate not only GameStop’s longevity, but also have ramifications across the entire video-gaming landscape. Private equity may be interested in GameStop, nonetheless.

Shopping for Income Within Retail in a Digital World

But there is still potential for income generation among more traditional retailers. Investors must be tremendously discerning in the retail area, however, as margin, and ultimately free cash flow, pressures remain prevalent. We like Walmart, Target, Costco as income ideas in the broader retail space, but TJX Companies and Best Buy may be worth a look, too. We're avoiding the department stores and teen retail like the plague, regardless of their Dividend Cushion ratios.
