General Mills Prepares for Cost Inflation, Pet Business Growing Rapidly
Image Source: General Mills Inc – Third Quarter of Fiscal 2021 IR Earnings Presentation. On March 24, General Mills posted third quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended February 28, 2021) that beat consensus top- and bottom-line estimates on a GAAP basis, though its adjusted non-GAAP bottom-line performance missed consensus estimates. General Mills has seen demand surge higher for its products in the wake of the coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic as households stockpiled goods and started eating at home more often. The company posted a solid fiscal third quarter earnings report, though its outlook is facing headwinds as General Mills is contending with cost inflation concerns. Shares of GIS yield ~3.4% and are trading just above our fair value estimate as of this writing, after selling off in the wake of its latest earnings report.

Earnings Roundup: BYND, DASH, DPZ, NVDA
Image Shown: Shares of DoorDash Inc tumbled after the food delivery service reported its latest earnings report near the end of February 2021. In this article, we've highlighted four companies that just reported their latest results. Domestic and international economic activities continued to face major headwinds from the coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic near the end of last year and into the beginning of this year, though corporates are now starting to plan for a world when “pre-pandemic” activities (such as going to eat indoors at a restaurant) can resume in earnest. Global health authorities are working to put an end to the public health crisis via ongoing COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts. In alphabetical order by ticker: BYND, DASH, DPZ, NVDA.

Stock Market Outlook for 2021
2020 was one from the history books and a year that will live on in infamy. That said, we are excited for the future as global health authorities are steadily putting an end to the public health crisis created by COVID-19, aided by the quick discovery of safe and viable vaccines. Tech, fintech, and payment processing firms were all big winners in 2020, and we expect that to continue being the case in 2021. Digital advertising, cloud-computing, and e-commerce activities are set to continue dominating their respective fields. Cybersecurity demand is moving higher and the constant threats posed by both governments (usually nations that are hostile to Western interests) and non-state actors highlights how crucial these services are. Retailers with omni-channel selling capabilities are well-positioned to ride the global economic recovery upwards. Green energy firms will continue to grow at a brisk pace in 2021, though the oil & gas industry appears ready for a comeback. The adoption of 5G wireless technologies and smartphones will create immense growth opportunities for smartphone makers, semiconductor players and telecommunications giants. Video streaming services have become ubiquitous over the past decade with room to continue growing as households “cut the cord” and instead opt for several video streaming packages. We’re not too big of fans of old industrial names given their capital-intensive nature relative to capital-light technology or fintech, but there are select names that have appeal. Cryptocurrencies have taken the market by storm as we turn the calendar into 2021, but the traditional banking system remains healthy enough to withstand another shock should it be on the horizon. Our fair value estimate of the S&P 500 remains $3,530-$3,920, but we may still be on a roller coaster ride for the year. Here’s to a great 2021!

ALERT: Bull Raids, Short Squeezes and Highly Unusual Market Activity
Image: Shares of GameStop have been on an irrationally wild ride recently driven by what looks to have been an orchestrated and highly unethical (and perhaps illegal) short squeeze on the stock. According to some reports, during the pre-market session January 25, GameStop’s shares were up ~80%, and turned red during the trading session, with no fundamental news.In late 2018, Valuentum published Value Trap, a book that warned to all that would heed its warning that a collapse in the traditional quant value factor was coming and that excessive volatility in the markets caused by price-agnostic trading--or those that aren’t paying attention to fair value estimate calculations--would only build and build to eventually reach extreme and irrational levels. The book, while hugely successful winning award after award, was largely ignored by the media, despite our best efforts to get the word out. Now, the chickens are coming home to roost.

Chicken Sandwich Wars Heating Up In the US
Image Shown: Rivals in the quick-service restaurant space are aggressively competing for share in the fast-growing premium chicken sandwich category following Popeyes' considerable success. Source: Images/logos property of the respective companies. Nothing has been the same in the fast-food industry since Popeyes launched its first nationwide chicken sandwich August 12, 2019. The release of the delicious chicken sandwich from the company named after Gene Hackman's character Popeye Doyle in the 1971 film The French Connection may even have changed the fast-food industry as we know it. Popeyes' "tender all-white meat chicken breast fillet, marinated in (its) authentic blend of Louisiana seasonings, then hand battered and breaded in (its) all new buttermilk coating...served with crisp barrel cured pickles and Classic or Spicy Mayonnaise, served on a warm and toasted buttery brioche bun" has been driving the taste buds of customers wild. Just writing this has made us hungry for one, and rivals haven't been sitting quietly in light of the success of Popeyes' new creation. Who can forget the infamous Popeyes and Chick-fil-A feud on Twitter that caught customers' attention, and even Wendy's couldn't resist jumping into the ring. There's clearly a lot at stake.

McDonald’s: Holding Up Well During the Pandemic
McDonald’s is without a doubt a fantastic enterprise with a storied history and moaty characteristics. The firm is holding up quite well and has managed to drive innovation to overcome almost every obstacle it has faced in the past. Though there are long-term risks to the dividend payout based on the Dividend Cushion ratio, the company’s credit marks and free cash flow generation are enough for us to be confident in a growing payout for the foreseeable future. Shares are fairly valued at the moment, but dividend growth investors might want to take a hard look at this fast-food behemoth for their portfolios.

Amazon Secures Big Win in the Online Grocery Market
Image Shown: Shares of Amazon have surged over the past year. Compared to their March 2020 lows, shares of AMZN have almost doubled as of this writing on August 10, 2020. On July 30, Amazon reported second-quarter earnings for 2020 that beat consensus top- and bottom-line estimates by a mile. As of this writing, shares of AMZN have almost doubled since hitting their March 2020 lows as Amazon’s lines of business were well-prepared to ride out the storm created by the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, assisted by the firm’s pristine balance sheet.

June Dividend Growth Newsletter & Intrinsic Value Investing
"But how, you will ask, does one decide what [stocks are] "attractive"? Most analysts feel they must choose between two approaches customarily thought to be in opposition: "value" and "growth,"...We view that as fuzzy thinking...Growth is always a component of value [and] the very term "value investing" is redundant." -- Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway annual report, 1992

Kroger Posts Solid Quarter, Issues Weak Guidance
Image Shown: Kroger Company – IR Presentation. Kroger’s same-store sales growth was a welcome sight as it relates to the current strength of the US consumer, but we are staying away from the retailer for a reason. Its large net debt load puts the company’s payout at risk during adverse economic conditions, and we think management should be battering down the hatches considering how late we are in the business cycle. Management ending Kroger’s incremental operating profit forecast is a troubling sign.

A Tale of Two Big Agricultural Industries: Protein Producers Win and Farm Equipment Manufacturers Lose After Recent USDA Report
Image Shown: The tale of two big agricultural companies in one chart, with shares of poultry producer Sanderson Farms Inc (SAFM) shooting up on Monday, August 12, as chicken feed prices fell after a recent USDA report (which sent corn prices sharply lower) while shares of agricultural equipment manufacturer AGCO Corporation (AGCO) tanked as the market priced in continued pressure on US farm incomes and the dynamic impact that has on demand for farm equipment. We are monitoring the agricultural industry but don’t have any agricultural-oriented equities in our Best Ideas Newsletter or Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios for a reason. In the short- to medium-term, the space will continue to experience volatility as the next chapter of the US-China trade war unfolds.
