General Mills Doing a Lot of Things Right, Shares Yield ~3.4%
Image Source: General Mills. General Mills has a long history, and the company’s ESG standards are admirable. Management is committed to the concept that the G in General Mills stands for “Good.” In 2022, for example, 29 million meals were enabled by donations of General Mills food across the globe. Roughly 87% of renewable energy was sourced for its global operations, while 92% of the company’s packaging is recyclable or reusable, as measured by weight. As for people, 50% of its Board of Directors are women, while 33% are ethnically diverse. During 2022, $90 million was contributed to charities by the company and its Foundation worldwide.

We Remain Bullish; Is This 1995 – The Beginning of a Huge Stock Market Run?
Image: Large cap growth stocks have trounced the performance of the S&P 500, REITs, and bonds since the beginning of 2023. We expect continued outperformance in this area of the market. We’re now roughly four years past the depths of the COVID-19 meltdown, where equities collapsed in February and March of 2020. As the markets began to recover through 2020, our long-term conviction in equities only grew stronger. We think the biggest risk for long-term investors remains staying out of the market on the basis of what could be considered stretched valuation multiples. As we outlined heavily in the book Value Trap, valuation multiples hardly tell the complete story about a company and often omit key long-term earnings growth, cash flow dynamics, and balance sheet health considerations. We remain bullish on equities for the long haul, and we think the next couple years will be incredibly strong. Our best ideas can be found in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio, High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio, ESG Newsletter portfolio, and via the Exclusive publication as well as options idea generation.

Walmart’s Free Cash Flow Remains Robust, Buys Vizio to Boost Advertising Business
Image: Walmart’s free cash flow generation during fiscal 2024 was superb and comfortably covers its cash dividends paid. Walmart is doing a fantastic job executing on its value proposition, and the company is in a sweet spot with respect to consumer trends given the step change in prices the past few years that is causing consumers to trade down to value offerings. The firm’s comp sales are coming in better than expected, and its free cash flow generation remains well in excess of its cash dividends paid, providing ample support for further dividend hikes. Walmart will execute a 3-for-1 stock split on February 23 and will begin trading on a post-split basis February 26. Though Walmart retains a massive net debt position, perhaps its only drawback from a financial standpoint, the company is a fantastic dividend grower and perhaps one of the best considerations within the retail space these days. Shares yield ~1.4% at the time of this writing.

Thinking Slow: 3 Research Blind Spots That Changed the Investment World
Image Source: We have to be on high alert about how our minds work. PBS recently delivered a four-part series examining how easily our minds are being hacked, and why it is so important to "think slow." When it comes to the active versus passive debate, does the analysis suffer from parameter risk? With respect to empirical, evidence-based analysis, does the analysis have the entire construct wrong? When it comes to short-cut multiples, are we falling into the behavioral trap of thinking on autopilot?

Use Both the Dividend Cushion Ratio (Probability of a Dividend Cut) and the Qualitative Dividend Ratings in Your Assessment of the Payout
The Dividend Cushion ratio ranks companies on the probability of a dividend cut in the longer run, while the qualitative ratings in part assess the outlook for the health of the payout in the near term in the context of management’s willingness to preserve and raise the payout. Since the systematic application of the Dividend Cushion ratio across our coverage in 2012, the Dividend Cushion ratio has forewarned readers of approximately 50 dividend cuts. We estimate its efficacy at ~90% at identifying the risks of a dividend cut in advance of the event.

Investors Likely Overreacting to Long-Run Impact That Weight-Loss Drugs Will Have on Snack and Food Stocks
Image: Domino’s stock has slumped recently due to weakening same-store sales expansion and concerns that weight-loss drugs will have on snack and food demand. The American eater continues to fight the “battle of the bulge” as many seek improved lifestyles and the health benefits from losing weight and getting in shape. The healthcare industry is delivering on this front, too, with diabetes drugs from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly called GLP-1 agonists that also have weight-loss benefits. Though we applaud what looks to be a solution in part for the obesity epidemic that has overtaken the U.S., investors are growing concerned that food that snack and food stocks will see slackening demand.
