Qurate Retail Faces Difficult Turnaround Process
Image Source: Qurate Retail Inc – First Quarter of 2022 IR Earnings Presentation. Executive Summary: Qurate Retail Inc is home to several well-known retail brands including QVC and HSN that operate television networks and online marketplaces that sell curated products. The company is contending with several exogenous shocks such as inflationary pressures and supply chain hurdles, while customer engagement levels are on the decline after growing during the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Qurate Retail has a massive net debt load and sizable annual financing obligations, and its margins have deteriorated substantially of late. Due to its complex share structure and management organization, weak financial position, and lackluster outlook, we are not interested in Qurate Retail’s common or preferred shares at this time. Qurate Retail is too risky for our taste.

Image Shown: Dollar General Corporation’s GAAP net sales rose in the first quarter of fiscal 2022 on a year-over-year basis due to growth in its net store count. Image Source: Dollar General Corporation – May 2022 8-K SEC Filing. As a discount retailer, Dollar General is contending with myriad headwinds though its underlying business is holding up quite well. We continue to view its capital appreciation upside potential quite favorably, and its dividend program offers incremental upside potential. Shares of DG yield ~1.0% as of this writing.

Best Idea Dollar General Roaring Higher
Image Shown: We like the niche Dollar General Corporation has carved out for itself in the competitive discount retail industry. Image Source: Dollar General Corporation – Fiscal 2021 Annual Report. Though the discount store retail industry is incredibly competitive, we like the niche that Dollar General Corp has carved out for itself by targeting towns and cities in the U.S. with populations of 20,000 or less. These are regions where e-commerce economics are not attractive due to hefty fulfillment costs, and often are underserved in terms of shopping options. Dollar General operates over 18,100 stores across 46 U.S. states and is included as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. We continue to be big fans of Dollar General. Our fair value estimate stands at $234 per share of DG with room for upside as the top end of our fair value estimate range sits at $281 per share.

Best Idea Dollar General Announces Plans to Go International
Image Source: Dollar General Corporation – Fiscal 2020 Annual Report. We are big fans of Dollar General. The discount retailer has several big initiatives underway to extend its growth runway while boosting per store sales and enhancing its margins. Shares of DG have been treading water over the past few months after surging during the 2020 calendar year, though we still room for significant capital appreciation upside potential going forward. The company is a tremendous free cash flow generator, and we like shares of DG as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio.

Best Idea Dollar General Beats Estimates and Raises Guidance
Image Source: Dollar General Corporation – Fiscal 2020 Annual Report. On May 27, Dollar General Corp reported first-quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended April 30, 2021) that smashed past consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. The company raised its full year guidance for fiscal 2021 in conjunction with its latest earnings report. We continue to be big fans of Dollar General and include shares of DG as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Dollar General is a discount retailer that is focused on catering to small cities and towns in the US with populations of 20,000 or less. These are regions where e-commerce operations with a home delivery component have historically had a difficult time meeting customer demand in an economical manner. The discount retailer’s business model has so far proven to be resilient in the face of the proliferation of e-commerce, and we expect that will continue being the case in the coming years.

Stock Market Outlook for 2021
2020 was one from the history books and a year that will live on in infamy. That said, we are excited for the future as global health authorities are steadily putting an end to the public health crisis created by COVID-19, aided by the quick discovery of safe and viable vaccines. Tech, fintech, and payment processing firms were all big winners in 2020, and we expect that to continue being the case in 2021. Digital advertising, cloud-computing, and e-commerce activities are set to continue dominating their respective fields. Cybersecurity demand is moving higher and the constant threats posed by both governments (usually nations that are hostile to Western interests) and non-state actors highlights how crucial these services are. Retailers with omni-channel selling capabilities are well-positioned to ride the global economic recovery upwards. Green energy firms will continue to grow at a brisk pace in 2021, though the oil & gas industry appears ready for a comeback. The adoption of 5G wireless technologies and smartphones will create immense growth opportunities for smartphone makers, semiconductor players and telecommunications giants. Video streaming services have become ubiquitous over the past decade with room to continue growing as households “cut the cord” and instead opt for several video streaming packages. We’re not too big of fans of old industrial names given their capital-intensive nature relative to capital-light technology or fintech, but there are select names that have appeal. Cryptocurrencies have taken the market by storm as we turn the calendar into 2021, but the traditional banking system remains healthy enough to withstand another shock should it be on the horizon. Our fair value estimate of the S&P 500 remains $3,530-$3,920, but we may still be on a roller coaster ride for the year. Here’s to a great 2021!

ICYMI: Valuentum's Brian Nelson on the Latest Howard Marks' Memo: "Something of Value"
Valuentum's President of Investment Research Brian Michael Nelson, CFA, explains why there are not really value and growth stocks, why most of the research in quantitative finance is spurious and needs to be redefined on a forward-looking basis, and why enterprise valuation (not the efficient markets hypothesis) should be the organizing principle of finance. Nelson explains his views about valuation, what it means to be a value investor, and investing in the context of Oaktree Capital Howard Marks' latest memo, "Something of Value," January 11, 2021.

Recent Data Indicates US Consumer Spending Holding Up Well, Online Sales Surging
Image Shown: As of this writing, the S&P 500 (SPY) appears ready to end 2020 on a high note, supported by the resilience of the US consumer. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic accelerated the shift towards e-commerce, and that change has long legs. Retailers that previously invested in their digital operations and omni-channel sales capabilities were able to capitalize on this shift while those that relied heavily on foot traffic were hurt badly. Numerous retailers went under in 2020 including J.C. Penney and Neiman Marcus. Holiday season shopping data indicates that US consumer spending was frontloaded and grew modestly in 2020, aided by surging e-commerce sales, which advanced nearly 50% on a year-over-year basis. The recent passage of additional fiscal stimulus measures in the US supports the outlook for the domestic economy going forward. Our fair value estimate range for the S&P 500 of 3,530-3,920 based on normalized economic conditions and dovish Fed/Treasury actions, released June 12 when the S&P 500 was trading ~3,000, remains unchanged. We remain bullish on stocks for the long run.
