Visa’s High Margin Business Reveals Consumer Spending Remains Resilient
Image: Visa has been a strong performer thus far in 2023. On October 24, Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holding Visa reported excellent fourth-quarter results for its fiscal 2023. Net revenues advanced 11% on a year-over-year basis, while non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP earnings per share leapt 18% and 21% year-over-year, respectively, in the period. For the fiscal year, Visa generated an impressive 64.4% operating margin. Payments volume increased 9% and cross-border volume advanced 16%, showcasing that the consumer remains very healthy thanks in part to low unemployment rates, despite concerns over higher mortgage costs, student loan repayments, and general economic uncertainty as savings accrued during the COVID-19 pandemic wane. We continue to be big fans of Visa as our top payments-related idea.

There Will Be Volatility
Image: An ETF tracking Russell 1000 "growth" stocks has outperformed an ETF tracking Russell 2000 "value" stocks since the beginning of 2021. To us, the market remains hypersensitive to almost every economic data point that hits the wires, and we’re just not going to play that game. The macro headlines and never-ending news flow are what many quant and algorithmic traders are trading on, and to a very large extent, for investors with a long-term horizon, these macro data points just don’t factor into the equation. When valuing equities, we’re always after mid-cycle expectations, not peak or trough performance, so our valuations implicitly embed a "normal" recession. Warren Buffett didn’t become a billionaire buying and selling on macro data points, and volatility is simply to be expected given the proliferation of price-agnostic trading these days. Instead of panicking over higher interest rates, we think investors should view the Fed’s work thus far as future potential dry powder to stimulate both the economy and the markets. Whenever you feel like stocks are no good, have a read of Warren Buffett’s classic piece written during the Great Financial Crisis, “Buy American. I Am.” To us, we still like stocks for the long run. Happy investing!

"Charles Schwab CEO on SVB fallout, contagion risk and deposits" -- CNBC Television
Image: Shares of Charles Schwab have faced considerable pressure as a result of the ongoing regional bank crisis. Charles Schwab CEO Walter Bettinger recently talked with CNBC's Sara Eisen about developments at the brokerage house.

Walmart Warns: “Prices Are Still High and There Is Considerable Pressure on the Consumer”
Image Source: Mike Mozart. Walmart’s outlook may very well be conservative, but its commentary certainly doesn’t bode well for many discretionary retailers and the broader economy. With the labor markets still strong and the producer price index still coming in hot, the Federal Reserve is not yet done raising rates. We expect the markets to test their uptrends and 200-day moving averages in the coming days to weeks, and if we break through these support levels to the downside, we won’t hesitate to “raise some cash” across the newsletter portfolios. When Walmart warns about the health of the consumer, we pay attention.

Market Whipsaw: Crypto Collapse and a Lower-than-Expected Inflation Print
Image: Uncertainty in the cryptocurrency markets has surged with concerns over the liquidity of a key exchange. Investors are weighing the spillover effects of crypto with the view that the pace of inflation may have peaked. The U.S. equity market continues to be highly volatile as it whipsaws between concerns over the health and sustainability of cryptocurrency and optimism over lower-than-feared inflation readings. We maintain our bearish/defensive stance on equities, but at the same time, we continue to be “fully-invested” across the simulated newsletter portfolios in part because we don’t want to miss out on days like today, November 10, when the markets are soaring ~2.5%-5.5% depending on which index you are monitoring. We’re also not ruling out a Santa Claus rally through the end of the year. Merry Dow Jones, as they say!

In the News: META, AAPL, AMZN, RSG, DLR, VRTX, XOM, CVX
Image Source: Valuentum. Readers should expect a substantial reduction in our fair value estimate of Meta Platforms on the basis of materially reduced forecasts of free cash flow. Apple’s calendar third-quarter results were good, considering that many were worried about iPhone 14 demand heading into the report. Amazon’s results support a cautious tone with respect to consumer spending, while we remain bullish on three of our best-performing ideas so far in 2022 – Vertex Pharma, Exxon Mobil, and Chevron. We didn’t see anything in the Republic Services and Digital Realty reports that would warrant any material changes to our theses at this time.

Visa’s Stock Remains Resilient, Huge Free Cash Flow Margins
Image Source: Visa. Visa is one of our favorite ideas for long-term capital appreciation potential and is included as a top “weighting” in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. The company boasts tremendous free cash flow margins, and its competitive profile is among the strongest across all of our coverage. Management just boosted its dividend in a big way, while also upping its share buyback authorization. We continue to be huge fans of the name.

Serious Question: What Are You Looking At?
Image: Stocks with the largest 52-week losses, according to YahooFinance. We've handled the worst performers of 2022 quite handily, and the simulated newsletter portfolios are showcasing the importance of our methodology and processes. We expect things to get worse in the economy before they get better, but we maintain our view that there may be nothing better out there than a subscription to Valuentum to navigate these tumultuous times.

Post-Mortem on Facebook (Meta Platforms): Apple Crushed Our Thesis
Image: Thesis creep kept us excited about Meta, but we've since trimmed the "weighting" in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. We still like Meta near these technical support levels, but only as a smaller "weighting" in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, as updated August 19. What more can we say--Apple is eating Facebook’s lunch, and the iPhone giant is now advancing with its advertising revenue, too. Apple blew up our thesis on Meta, and that's the long and short of it.
