Fed Rate Decision, UAW Strike Continues, Microsoft Ups Payout
Image Source: Mike Mozart. If you’re thinking like us about the ongoing Fed rate-hiking cycle, you’re probably thinking that perhaps we’ll see another rate hike or two down the road, even if the Fed pauses at today’s September 20 meeting. However, whether the Fed pauses from here on out or executes a couple more hikes, it really shouldn’t matter much to long-term investors. From where we stand, the conversation about interest rates should now be shifting away from worries about elevated inflation to the future positive prospects that correspond to the work that the Fed has already done. With the market-cap weighted S&P 500 just a stone’s throw away from all-time highs, despite aggressive contractionary monetary policy, we believe the market may start to view the existing levels of “high” near-term interest rates as dry powder for the Fed to stimulate the economy in the future, if or when it’s needed. The Fed has now built up a very nice insurance policy with little damage done to the U.S. stock market, and we think equities, particularly the stylistic area of large cap growth, may continue to reward investors as such a positive view is eventually factored in. New highs may once again be in the cards, and we remain bullish on the equity markets today, despite the ominous volatility experienced the past 20+ months.

Report Updates -- Did You Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater?
The markets are finally making sense again, and we remain huge fans of big cap tech and the stylistic area of large cap growth. Though entities are starting to register high ratings on the Valuentum Buying Index, we’re not pulling the trigger on either Alibaba or Korn/Ferry in light of the tremendous risks related to U.S-China relations for Alibaba and the lack of fundamental catalysts for Korn/Ferry. That said, should these firms’ technical and momentum indicators shape up, their equity prices could really catch a bid, in our view. The newsletter portfolios continue to deliver in a big way, not only generating outperformance relative to the market-cap weighted S&P 500 during 2022, but also positioning well for the boom in big cap tech and the stylistic area of large cap growth that has materialized in 2023. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Apple Breaks Through Uptrend; Expect Modest Market Pullback
Image: Apple has been a strong performer thus far in 2023, but the stock has broken through its uptrend. Further selling may be ahead of shares. In light of Apple’s weighting across major market indices, investors should expect a modest pullback in the markets. On August 3, Apple Inc. reported third-quarter fiscal 2023 results that gave the market a reason to sell its shares. Though the iPhone maker’s quarterly results largely matched the consensus forecasts for both the top and bottom line, year-over-year declines in iPhone, Mac, and iPad sales, while expected, were evident in the quarter, even as its Services business grew meaningfully from last year's period. A technical breakdown in its uptrend sparked selling after the report, but we continue to be in awe of Apple’s financial prowess that continues to showcase a substantial net cash position and tremendous free cash flow generation.

Expect Huge Equity Returns This Decade, Much More Volatility However
Image: Without question, the stylistic area of large cap growth has been the place to be for almost 15 years now. We think it remains the place to be. We expect huge equity returns this decade, but much more volatility – the kind of volatility that will make holding stocks painful at times (and shake out some investors at the worst possible time), but it is what it is, as it has always been. We’re as bullish today as we’ve ever been. Cheers!

ALERT: Going to “Fully Invested” in the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio
Image: Since the publishing of the first edition of the book Value Trap, the stylistic area of large cap growth (SCHG) has meaningfully outperformed both the equal-weight S&P 500 (SPY) and small cap value (IWN).With the debt-ceiling debate behind the markets, the regional banking crisis largely in the rear-view mirror, and the Fed winning the fight against inflation, a continuation of the strength in the markets as witnessed from the October 2022 lows can probably be expected. We're going to "fully invested" in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio today and expect to do the same in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio and High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio soon.

Call Me Unconcerned
Image: Large cap growth has dominated returns the past five years. The Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio continues to have significant exposure to this area. We’re taking it slow this time of year. With the area of large cap growth nearly doubling since the beginning of 2018, trouncing the return of the broader market, dividend growth strategies, the area of small cap value and general REIT indices, it’s just hard to find much wrong with staying pat. The proliferation of artificial intelligence will likely propel big cap tech and large cap growth to new highs, while small cap value may continue to be weighed down by the banks--and dividend-oriented strategies may face continued pressure from rising interest rates and tired real estate markets. Things were a bit murky during 2022, but thanks for keeping the faith.

Apple’s Second-Quarter Fiscal 2023 Results Were Good Enough
Image Source: Valuentum. On May 4, Apple reported second-quarter results for its fiscal 2023 for the period ending April 1, 2023, that were slightly better than consensus forecast, but we’re viewing the report as mixed. Revenue dropped 2.5% in the quarter on a year-over-year basis as better-than-expected resilience in iPhone sales could not offset weakness in Mac and iPad performance, and its quarterly EPS of $1.52 was unchanged from last year’s mark. Revenue in the company’s Services business jumped 5.4%, and the iPhone maker announced a $90 billion buyback program as it upped its quarterly dividend by more than 4%, to $0.24 per quarter. We plan to make a few tweaks to our valuation model of Apple, but we don’t anticipate a material change to our fair value estimate.

1Q 2023 Earnings Coming in Better Than Feared Thus Far
Image: We view valuation as a range of probable fair value outcomes. Our updated fair value estimate for Booking Holding stands north of $3,000, while shares are trading at less than $2,700. First-quarter 2023 earnings season has been coming in better than feared, in our view, and bank earnings have not spooked the market as many may have thought they would. But again, any banking crisis takes far more than just a month or two to work through the system, and in the event another shoe drops – whether in Europe or in U.S. commercial real estate or U.S. housing – things could get ugly for the banking sector. We continue to prefer equities over bonds, and as was shown once again during SVB Financial meltdown, the Fed was there once again to bail out the “market” and prevent contagion at any cost. With roughly 10% of the S&P 500 reporting first-quarter 2023 earnings so far, many companies have been beating consensus estimates.

Markets Don’t Look Bad
Image: The market-capitalization weighted S&P 500 continues to hold its January breakout, while support held in mid-March. The market-capitalization weighted S&P 500 is no longer in a downtrend, and while the regional banking crisis gave investors pause, we’d have to say the markets don’t look bad. From a technical standpoint, the SPY broke through its downtrend in January, while it held support in mid-March. If the S&P 500 can break through the early February near-term highs, technically, things are looking quite good for the beginnings of this nascent market leg-up. It’s been a long road to get to what looks like a “bottom,” but we might have witnessed it in October of last year.

We Woke Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed
Image: Valuentum's President of Investment Research Brian Nelson, CFA. Let's cover five controversial topics today: 1) Large cap growth still dominating small cap value. 2) Who cares about whether fund managers beat their benchmarks. Pick the best group of stocks, right? 3) Dividends are capital appreciation that otherwise would have been achieved had the dividend not been paid. 4) Go figure -- bonds are down again so far in 2023. 5) REITs are underperformers and haven't been reliable dividend payers.
