Pet Insurer Trupanion’s Business Facing Numerous Challenges; Short Interest at 35%+
Image: Trupanion may be growing its top line like a weed, but its operating losses have been growing, too. Image Source: Trupanion 10-K. The insurance business is a tough one, and medical pet insurance may be even more difficult. A number of dynamics from adverse selection to conflicts of interest to lack of bargaining power within the industry’s structure have plagued Trupanion’s financial performance for years, with the company accumulating significant net losses since inception. We’re huge fans of Trupanion’s moaty network of clients and veterinarians as well as its tremendous top-line growth potential, but veterinarians continue to capture the industry’s economic rents, in our view, to the detriment of Trupanion’s shareholders. Unit economics have not been adding up at Trupanion either, and free cash flow has been meager at best for a very long time. As veterinarian costs continue to rise and the firm receives push back on proposed rate increases, Trupanion’s net losses may continue to mount, and even under optimistic assumptions, Trupanion’s shares could be considered rich.

Domino’s Pizza Breaks Through Downtrend on Uber Eats and Postmates Deal
Image Source: Domino’s Pizza is up nearly 14% on a year-to-date basis during 2023, but the company’s shares haven’t done much over the past 52 weeks. On July 12, Domino’s Pizza announced that it had inked a new deal with Uber that would allow customers in the U.S. to order Domino’s food through the Uber Eats and Postmates apps with delivery provided by drivers of Domino’s and its franchisees. Domino’s Pizza continues to be a standout leader in digital initiatives across the restaurant arena, and the firm noted that the new agreement will open up Domino’s and its franchisees “to a new segment of customers and what (it) believes will be a meaningful amount of incremental delivery orders.” The high end of our fair value estimate of Domino’s stands at $450 per share.

An Important Measure of Leverage for Dividend-Growth and Income-Oriented Shareholders, One That Is Dividend-Adjusted
As more and more investors rely on company dividends for income, dividends, in our view, have become more debt-like commitments in nature, especially from the perspective of dividend-growth or income-oriented shareholders. Years ago, we rolled out a measure of financial leverage that considers both the company’s debt and the present value of its future expected cash dividend obligations, which, in the eyes of die-hard dividend-growth or income-oriented shareholders, may be implicitly assumed to be debt-like commitments in substance. We think this leverage ratio can be used in conjunction with the Dividend Cushion ratio to gain additional insight into the dividend-paying financial health of an entity.

Meta’s Threads Launch Immaterial to Meta But Tragic for Twitter
Image: Threads logo. Meta has launched a Twitter-killer with its new real-time online conversation app, Threads. Meta’s launch of Threads may not be too big of a needle-mover at Meta when it comes to new advertising dollar spending, but we like the incremental move toward creating an ecosystem of interconnected apps and properties. We think Twitter’s days are numbered, with the bird app already shedding a large percentage of its workforce just to keep the lights on. We might see a cage match between Musk and Zuckerberg after all.

How Much More Will Consumers Pay for McCormick Spices?
Image: Pricing growth remains the story at McCormick, but for how long? Image Source: McCormick. Just how much further McCormick will push pricing initiatives remains to be seen, but we think investor caution is in order. The stock is already trading at 33x current fiscal year adjusted earnings, and its shares have yet to return to the peak levels reached during 2020. We wonder if there may be troubling times ahead. Our fair value estimate stands at $73 per share, well below where shares are currently trading.

Nike’s Fourth-Quarter Fiscal 2023 Earnings Miss Not Tragic But Better Opportunities Elsewhere
Image: Valuentum. On June 29, Nike reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2023 results for the period ending May 31, 2023. During the quarter, revenue advanced 5% and 8% on a currency-neutral basis, but investors mostly focused on Nike’s bottom line, where diluted earnings per share fell 27%, to $0.66, missing the consensus estimate by a couple pennies. The firm expects material improvement in fiscal 2024, but we’re skeptical of just how much. We like better opportunities elsewhere.

Tesla Registers Record Total Deliveries in Second Quarter 2023
Source: Tesla. We’ve liked Tesla’s share-price strength so far this year, and record total deliveries during the second quarter of 2023 help to continue to support its impressive share-price move. The high end of our fair value estimate range of Tesla stands at $335 per share, meaning shares of Tesla still have more room to run. The company remains one of the most speculative ways to play U.S. equities.

Walmart's 'Great Value' Brand and Position Across Retail Never Stronger
Image: Walmart’s shares have gotten back on track. We think Walmart’s ‘Great Value’ brand and position across bargain retail has never been stronger, and its share price reflects a company that is at a sweet spot of consumer demand as rivals continue to struggle. The high end of our fair value estimate range of Walmart stands north of $170, and shares yield ~1.4% at the moment. We’re liking what we see at Walmart these days.
