Dollar General Posts Another Stellar Earnings Report
Image Shown: Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holding Dollar General Corporation has seen its stock price climb significantly higher year-to-date, as of this writing on August 27. On August 27, Dollar General Corp reported second quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended July 31, 2020) that beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. The retailer’s same-store sales increased by 18.8% year-over-year aided by a series of initiatives that we have covered in the past including DG Pickup (Dollar General had stepped up its digital investments in recent years, with DG Pickup offering customers a way to order via mobile device and pickup those goods in-store), DG Fresh (Dollar General is adding more consumer staples offerings to its stores, namely refrigerated and frozen foods), and by placing a greater emphasis on selling non-consumable products (which carry higher gross margins). Longer term, Dollar General wants to add more fresh produce to its stores.

Hats Off to Powell and Mnuchin!
"My hat goes off to Powell and Mnuchin. As you know, I used to be a big believer in (very) hands-off government policies when it comes to the free-market system, but we can no longer afford that today. There are too many investors that aren't paying attention to their investments and/or pursuing misguided correlation analysis. Many have noted, including Danielle DiMartino Booth, that "the Fed could be setting the US economy up for a harder fall down the road by flooding markets with cash and spurring investors to prop up firms that are not fit to survive." Almost completely lost today, however, is that the Fed and Treasury also propped up almost every investment firm tied to indexing and modern portfolio theory." -- Valuentum's President Brian Nelson, CFA

Dick’s Sporting Goods Finds E-Commerce Success
Image Shown: Shares of Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc rallied by ~16% during normal trading hours on August 26 after reporting stellar same-store sales growth.  On August 26, Dick’s Sporting Goods reported second quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended August 1, 2020) that beat consensus estimates on both the top- and bottom-lines. Driving this outperformance was Dick’s Sporting Goods’ 20.7% year-over-year increase in same-store sales as its e-commerce sales rose by 194%, which includes sales conducted through its curbside contactless pickup option. E-commerce sales represented ~30% of the sporting goods retailer’s total sales last fiscal quarter. Average ticket sizes and the number of transactions both grew last fiscal quarter according to management commentary included in the earnings press release. Shares of DKS shot up by almost 16% after the report was published during normal trading hours on August 26. As of this writing, shares of DKS are trading near the upper bound of our fair value estimate range (which sits at $56 per share). That means shares of Dick’s Sporting Goods appear fairly valued at the moment, and we like its strong e-commerce performance and improving outlook. After reinitiating its quarterly dividend program this past June, shares of DKS yield 2.3% on a forward-looking basis (with an annualized payout of $1.25 per share of its common stock). We will cover its financial strength and dividend policy in greater detail in this note.

Papa John’s Posts Stellar Comparable Store Sales Growth
Image Shown: Shares of Papa John’s International Inc have surged upwards year-to date as of this writing. One company that has proven to be very resilient during the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic is Papa John’s International. We significantly raised our fair value estimate for shares of PZZA back in June 2020. As of this writing, Papa John’s is trading right at the top of our fair value estimate range which sits at $99 per share of PZZA. The company has an asset-light business model and a quality cash flow profile, a product of its focus on franchise operations, though Papa John’s does own some of its store locations. As of December 29, 2019, Papa John’s had 5,395 restaurant locations worldwide operating in 49 countries and territories. Out of those locations, ~89% were franchised and the rest were either owned by the company or by a joint-venture the company had an economic stake in. Papa John’s success largely stems from past major investments in its digital presence and a heavy focus on home delivery and carryout offerings. With the pandemic forcing households to stay in and many restaurants to close, Papa John’s rose to the occasion to meet rising consumer demand.

L Brands Beats Low Expectations
Image Shown: Though shares of L Brands Inc are up year-to-date, they remain down significantly over the past five years as of this writing (before taking dividend considerations into account). The owner of the Victoria’s Secret, PINK, and Bath & Body Works retail brands L Brands reported second quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended August 1, 2020) on August 19 that smashed past both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. However, those estimates were a low bar to beat as analysts had already factored in the significant headwinds the coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic created for its business. Last fiscal quarter, L Brands reopened most of its stores and leaned on e-commerce sales channels to meet customer demand as best it could. For reference, Victoria’s Secret and PINK (collectively referred to as Victoria’s Secret by L Brands) sell lingerie and similar apparel/accessories while Bath & Body Works sells fragrances, soaps, hygiene products, and similar offerings.

Intel Plans to Repurchase a Lot of Its Stock
Image Shown: Intel Corporation is having trouble producing the next generation of chips (7-nm and smaller) as its current manufacturing process is having yield issues, which we covered previously. Image Source: Intel Corporation – Architecture Day 2020 Presentation. On July 23, Intel Corp reported second quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended June 27, 2020) that we covered in detail here. For members that have not yet read that note, we strongly encourage them to do so. Please note that delays in Intel’s 7-nm chip production schedule weighed negatively on its medium-term outlook, which sent shares of INTC meaningfully lower after its latest earnings report. Management recently responded by announcing a plan to aggressively buy back Intel’s stock, after previously suspending the company’s share buyback program in March 2020 due to uncertainties created by the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic.

Nvidia Bets Big on Data Centers
Image Source: Nvidia Corporation – 2020 Annual Meeting of Stockholders Presentation. On August 19, Nvidia Corp reported second quarter fiscal 2021 earnings (period ended July 26, 2020) that beat consensus top-line estimates (on a GAAP basis) and consensus bottom-line estimates (on a non-GAAP basis, as its GAAP earnings were slightly lower than consensus estimates). Nvidia has several things going for it including a pristine balance sheet (meaning a net cash position), a data center business that is growing at a brisk pace (which we will cover in this note), a high quality cash flow profile (relatively low capital expenditure requirements to generate meaningful revenues), and its outlook is supported by secular growth tailwinds, particularly as it relates to demand from cloud computing providers. Shares of NVDA yield a negligible ~0.1% as of this writing.
