Yum! Brands Buys Habit Restaurants
Image Shown: An overview of Yum! Brands Inc’s operations. Image Source: Yum! Brands Inc - Investor Fact Sheet. On January 6, quick-service restaurant chain Yum! Brands (which owns the KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell brands) announced that it was acquiring fast causal burger joint Habit Restaurants for $14 per share in cash for a total cash consideration of $375 million. Habit Burger’s footprint includes ~265 restaurants in total across more than a dozen US states and China under its namesake brand, Habit Burger Grill, and please note roughly 90% of those locations are company-owned. Having the benefit of Yum! Brands global marketing and advertising wing will support future growth endeavors at the Habit Burger Grill brand. We still aren’t interested in shares of YUM here as the top end of our fair value range estimate sits at $106, or just a few dollars ahead of where YUM is trading at as of this writing.

Dividend Cushion Ratio Catches Another Dividend Cut
Image Shown: Tupperware Brands Corporation suspended its dividend in November 2019, a pitfall investors could have avoided by utilizing Valuentum’s proprietary Dividend Cushion ratio. Our Dividend Cushion ratio can be a very useful tool for income seeking investors that wish to avoid payout cuts and the likely capital depreciation that follows. The Dividend Cushion ratio is based on our forecast of the firm’s future free cash flows over the next five full fiscal years, less its net debt or plus its net cash position, divided by its expected dividend obligations during this period. We view this as a powerful gauge of a company’s true dividend coverage, as compared to EPS payout ratios which are backward looking and flawed when evaluating the ability to cover future dividend obligations. This metric has been successfully in warning investors about numerous value traps over the years, including packaging company Tupperware Brands Corp. The company sells anything from plastic kitchen storage containers under its Tupperware brand to beauty products under its NaturCare and other brands. The Dividend Cushion also most recently warned about the cut at Core Labs, too.

Apple, Microsoft Dominated This Decade
Source: Marketwatch. Data by Andrea Riquier, through December 27, 2019*.The three best contributors to the S&P 500 return during 2019 have been included in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio for a long time, two of them, Apple and Facebook are top weighted (see image at the end of this article). Three of the biggest contributors to the S&P 500 return during this decade have been included in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio for a long time (see image above). Sure -- these are household names, but it's important you understand that mispricings can occur anywhere, even with some of the most popular names. Investing is synonymous with identifying mispriced securities.

Dividend Growth Newsletter Portfolio Delivers Again in 2019
The story of the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio this year was one dominated by big tech. Apple trounced the return of what could be considered our benchmark by about 80 percentage points. It basically beat the S&P Dividend ETF SDPR by a factor of about 5 times! 2019 was simply the year to own Apple, and my goodness we had it right near the top of both the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio. You would think this was a no-brainer, as everyone loves Apple, but many a portfolio manager did not own Apple this year. Apple also upped its dividend 5%+ during 2019...

Reflecting on Two of Our Favorite Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio Holdings
As we get closer to finishing out 2019, let’s take a look at two of the big winners in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio this year: Facebook and Alphabet. What a comeback Facebook has made since the summer of 2018! On the basis of our fair value estimate, we expect the company to surpass new highs. Alphabet just hit an all-time high last month, too!

Shares of Home Depot Appear Overvalued
On November 19, Home Depot reported third-quarter earnings for fiscal 2019 (period November 3, 2019), and same-store sales growth fell way short of expectations which sent shares of HD sharply lower on the day. Company-wide same-store sales rose by 3.6% year-over-year, supported by 3.8% year-over-year growth in the US last quarter. We think Home Depot's shares are way ahead of themselves given rising exogenous headwinds and the looming threat of additional tariffs should ongoing US-China trade talks break down. The company has a great cash flow profile, but its valuation is stretched as the growth rates required to justify its current valuation aren’t realistic, in our view.

Chesapeake Energy’s Pain Indicates Nothing “Safe” About Energy MLP Distributions
Image Source: Valuentum slide deck, December 2015. Valuentum released its bearish case on MLPs in June 2015.  Summary There is nothing "safe" in the stock market, and given the track record of the distributions of pipeline MLPs, there is nothing "safe" about pipeline MLP distributions. The MLP business model continues to be phased out, a trend that we anticipated when we made our bearish call on the group in June 2015. Chesapeake Energy's pain is a yet another reminder of the pipeline MLP group's exposure to energy resource pricing through the health (or rather ill-health) of its customer base. We continue to encourage pipeline operators to disclose free cash flow (cash flow from operations less all gross capital spending) prominently in press releases, alongside other industry-specific metrics. Investors of Chesapeake could get completely wiped out in a Chesapeake bankruptcy, and this could have implications across the pipeline MLP arena.
