Kroger Posts Solid Quarter, Issues Weak Guidance
Image Shown: Kroger Company – IR Presentation. Kroger’s same-store sales growth was a welcome sight as it relates to the current strength of the US consumer, but we are staying away from the retailer for a reason. Its large net debt load puts the company’s payout at risk during adverse economic conditions, and we think management should be battering down the hatches considering how late we are in the business cycle. Management ending Kroger’s incremental operating profit forecast is a troubling sign. Sep 13, 2019
Dividend Increases/Decreases for the Week Ending September 13
Let's take a look at companies that raised/lowered their dividend this week. Sep 12, 2019
Merck Shows Impressive Margin Expansion
Image Source: Merck & Co Inc -- IR Presentation. Merck is improving its financials and we like that, but we still aren’t interested in shares after the run up during the past year and a half. The pharmaceutical giant’s net debt load is manageable given its strong free cash flows, but dividend growth will require share buybacks to be pared back first in order to make room for payout growth. It will take some time until we get an idea of how well Merck’s recent acquisitions pan out. Sep 12, 2019

Economic Roundtable: “Value” Versus “Growth” Rotation
“This kind of trading activity could be setting the stage for a big quant fund blow up, if the kind of leverage it takes to move the markets to this magnitude was applied. All it may take is for the B/M “value” factor to continue to suffer in the coming 12-18 months--it’s possible we could see a few quant firms go belly up. My guess is that market participants are paying very close attention to this activity, and if they “smell blood,” things could get ugly.” – Brian Nelson, CFA Sep 11, 2019
Why We Like BIN Holding Visa So Much
Recent volatility in Visa’s share price aside, the long-term trajectory of this company is sound and shares of Visa trade modestly below our fair value estimate at this time. We like the strong upward momentum in Visa’s share price year-to-date and expect that shares of V could test the upper bounds of our fair value range (as it stands today) over time. Sep 11, 2019
Apple Makes Its Big Push Into Services
Apple announced that Apple TV+ would launch November 1, 2019, during its big update event on September 10. This marks the beginning of Apple’s transition from a hardware and software company to a hardware, software, and services giant. Sep 10, 2019
Consider This Blue Chip High Yield Dividend Play
Shares of AT&T moved higher on September 9 after hedge fund manager Elliott Management, run by multibillionaire activist investor Paul Singer, disclosed a $3.2 billion stake in the firm. The hedge fund has big plans for AT&T and is pushing for changes at the telecommunications, media, and entertainment company. Sep 6, 2019
DGN Holding Realty Income Continues Moving Higher
We like Realty Income and think there’s room for additional upside. As growth in global economic activity continues slowing down, weakening demand for US exports and hurting business confidence, the Federal Reserve is increasingly leaning towards additional rate cuts. REITs are major beneficiaries of a lower interest rate environment, especially those with top quality investment grade credit ratings and nice long growth runways like Realty Income. Sep 6, 2019
Shares of DGN Holding Digital Realty Climbing Upwards
Image Source: Digital Realty Trust -- IR Presentation. Digital Realty is trading right above the top end of our fair value estimate range as of this writing, but we are keeping this holding in our Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio given its strong technical performance. We think excitement over the prospect of the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates will continue to drive shares of higher yielding names higher, which includes high-quality data center REITs like Digital Realty.
