Amazon Surges; Fair Value Under Review
Amazon is no “online book store.” The company’s web services operation is a powerhouse, and its earnings potential is starting to show. We liked the company’s first-quarter 2018 results a lot.

What’s Working (or NOT Working) in Today’s Market?
Image shown: Crude oil continues to lead gainers while consumer staples, REITs, and energy MLPs continue to get shellacked. Let’s take a look at what’s been working and what’s not been working in the market thus far in 2018. To little surprise, in our opinion, commodity prices have been the leaders, while interest-rate sensitive equities have been the laggards. We’ve been expecting this.

JD.com Set to Take on Amazon Head On
Image Source: JD.com fourth-quarter presentation. Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has grown at a tremendous rate in recent years, and it is expected to continue taking advantage of a ripe opportunity in its home nation. However, management has more grandiose plans for its burgeoning e-commerce platform as it expects to make its US debut before the end of 2018.

Walgreens Boots Alliance Remains at the Crossroads of a Rapidly-Evolving Healthcare Landscape
Image Source: Walgreens 2Q 2018 Earnings Release. The evolving healthcare landscape has been dealing with the threat of a disruptive new competitor entering the market and considerable political risk. Though the need for healthcare remains impervious to economic forces, a clear deflationary trend has descended on the industry that has affected many of the well-entrenched participants. Let’s examine Walgreens Boots Alliance for clues that a shift in sentiment may have occurred in this well known, yet beleaguered sector.

Trump Knocks Air Out of Amazon; Intel Investors Overreact to Apple News
Only fools, or worse, are saying that our money losing Post Office makes money with Amazon. THEY LOSE A FORTUNE, and this will be changed. Also, our fully tax paying retailers are closing stores all over the country...not a level playing field! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 2, 2018 President Trump continues to move markets, and his messages about Amazon haven’t gone unnoticed. Apple seems to be targeting wider gross margins in coming years, as it looks to bring in-house a part of its supply chain. Intel’s shares overreact.

General Mills' Dividend Is Now of Questionable Health
General Mills is stuck between a rock and a hard place, and the market is finally noticing. Its best dividend growth years have been behind it, but its recent dealings have put it in a rather precarious position heading into the next recession, the timing of which is the only uncertainty. The company has never been a consideration for inclusion in the simulated Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio.

Market Overreacts to Oracle’s Cloud Outlook
Image Shown: The performance of Oracle since the March 2009 bottom. Oracle reported in-line fiscal third-quarter results March 19, but its outlook for cloud revenues came in just a bit short relative to consensus expectations. The market seems to be overreacting.

Cigna, Express, and the Unwinding of the PBM Market
Image Source: Cigna. Given its track record of creative destruction, when Amazon plans to enter a particular line of business, it presents an ominous threat to incumbents. What is often overlooked, too, is that Amazon is more than willing to try new verticals—if they prove promising, additional assets will be devoted to the new line of business, often with fawning media coverage. If Amazon is unsuccessful in its endeavor, however, then it seems as though it will “fail fast” and shut down the project and move on. We found the recent announcement of a joint venture to tackle the healthcare industry as particularly noteworthy.

Toys ‘R’ Us Liquidation News Transient to Toy Makers
Image Source: Hasbro. Another icon from past decades announced that it may have to liquidate. Though we expect the toy makers to experience a transient impact, we don’t expect it to be lasting. Digital entertainment and licensing remains a faster-growing, higher-margin business for them than physical toy sales, and we expect the focus for many toy makers going forward will be on the former, particularly given Disney’s Frozen success.

The Future for Independent Advisors and Planners Is…Stock Selection? What?
Image Source: 401K Calculator. "The annual fee of 0.04% to invest in an index ETF, for example, on a portfolio of $250,000 might run about $100/year. Over 25 years, assuming no compounding, that’s $2,500. Setting up a diversified portfolio of 40-50 or so blue-chip, moaty, dividend-paying stocks might cost $200-$300 in total over 25 years, assuming little-to-no turnover, set up through a discount broker. Spread out over dozens of clients, you’re talking real savings for clients."
