At the start of 2023, Tesla’s (TSLA) price-to-fair value ratio stood at just 0.39, revealing a stock that was severely undervalued and one of the most undervalued stocks in our coverage universe. Shares of Tesla have rocketed higher more than 150% so far in 2023, and while we highlighted it as one of our favorite stocks to start this year, it never made it into the newsletter portfolios. We’re not too worried about that though given how well the newsletter portfolios were positioned with respect to exposure to large cap growth, which, itself, is up more than 35% so far in 2023.
On July 2, Tesla noted that it delivered a total of 466,140 Model S/X (19,225) and Model 3/Y (446,915) during the second quarter of 2023, above expectations. The company has navigated a lot of distractions quite well, not the least of which has been Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s foray into Twitter and now speculation about a cage fight between Elon Musk and Meta Platforms’ (META) CEO Mark Zukerberg. The thought of a cage match is just so silly that it might just happen.
We’ve liked Tesla’s share-price strength so far this year, and record total deliveries during the second quarter of 2023 help to continue to support its impressive share-price move. The high end of our fair value estimate range of Tesla stands at $335 per share, meaning shares of Tesla still have more room to run. The company remains one of the most speculative ways to play U.S. equities.
